Tripura Launches Northeast's Second Tea Auction Centre, Empowering Local Growers

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday inaugurated the Agartala Tea Auction Centre, establishing the state's first dedicated tea trading hub and marking the Northeast's second such facility after Assam's long-standing centre.
The facility addresses a long-standing bottleneck for Tripura's tea growers, who have historically relied on distant auction venues that inflated transit costs and limited price discovery. With Tripura producing thousands of kilograms of orthodox and CTC tea annually, the new centre is expected to streamline logistics, reduce intermediary margins, and open direct pathways to both domestic retailers and overseas buyers.
According to industry reports, the chief minister described the ATAC as a game-changer for the region's tea ecosystem, emphasizing that growers would now have greater negotiating power and transparency in pricing. Analysts noted that the centre aligns with broader government efforts to modernize agricultural marketing infrastructure in the Northeast.
The Agartala centre is poised to operate in phases, with initial auctions slated for the coming months and plans to integrate digital bidding platforms to attract national and international participants. If successful, the model could be replicated across other tea-producing districts in the Northeast, potentially reshaping the region's $1.5 billion tea industry and strengthening India's position in global tea markets.
