Vijayapura Inclusion Demand Sparks Intense Opposition Over Article 371(J) Status in Karnataka
A regional committee in Karnataka has strongly opposed proposals to extend Article 371(J) special status benefits to the Vijayapura district. Leaders have threatened statewide demonstrations if the administration alters the boundaries currently designated exclusively for the Kalyana Karnataka region.

- The Samiti has officially rejected proposals seeking the extension of Article 371(J) provisions to Vijayapura.
- Protest organizers have issued warnings of imminent civil unrest and widespread protests if the territorial scope is modified.
- The controversy highlights ongoing sensitivities surrounding regional development allocations and special constitutional safeguards in Karnataka.
VIJAYAPURA — Regional tensions have flared across Karnataka following staunch opposition from a prominent civic committee against expanding the special constitutional privileges of Article 371(J) to encompass the Vijayapura district. The dispute centers on whether administrative boundaries tied to developmental benefits should be widened beyond their original mandate.
Article 371(J) of the Constitution was originally enacted to accelerate regional growth, educational access, and employment opportunities specifically for the historically underserved Kalyana Karnataka territory, formerly known as the Hyderabad-Karnataka area. Any attempt to dilute these targeted provisions by incorporating neighboring districts has historically triggered intense debate among local stakeholders who rely on these safeguards for equitable regional progress.
According to reports by The Hindu, Samiti representative Lakshman Dasti voiced unequivocal resistance during a press address, warning authorities that any policy shift to include regions outside the designated zone would force local groups into aggressive demonstrations. Dasti emphasized that diluting the geographical criteria would undermine the intended purpose of the special status provisions, which were hard-won to address localized economic disparities.
