GANGTOK — In a major policy overhaul impacting grassroots governance across the country, the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj has declared that Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) paired with advanced biometric verification will henceforth replace Aadhaar as the primary mechanism for authenticating welfare beneficiaries.
The strategic adjustment marks a departure from standard nationwide identity verification protocols, shifting the administrative focus back to electoral credentials for rural development programs. By anchoring welfare distribution to Voter IDs, the central government aims to tighten disbursement channels and ensure greater accountability within the three-tier panchayati raj framework.
According to reports by EastMojo, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, widely known as Lalan Singh, formally unveiled this directive on Tuesday during his official visit to Sikkim's capital. The announcement signals an evolving approach to administrative compliance, as federal authorities seek to integrate localized electoral databases with biometric security measures to plug potential systemic leaks.
