Telangana Warns of Prolonged El Nino Water and Energy Crisis Stretching to Mid-2027

HYDERABAD — Telangana Chief Minister Revanth has issued a critical alert regarding an intensifying resource deficit driven by El Nino weather patterns, warning citizens that severe water and power shortages are projected to persist well into July 2027.
The unfolding crisis highlights deep-seated vulnerabilities in regional hydrology and power grids, exacerbated by shifting climate patterns. State authorities note that prolonged dry spells and irregular monsoon behaviors have severely depleted underground water tables, placing unprecedented strain on municipal supplies and agricultural operations alike.
According to reports by The Hindu, the administration is facing mounting pressure as approximately 15 lakh out of the state's total 30 lakh agricultural pump sets have already ceased functioning due to receding groundwater levels. In response to the escalating situation, Chief Minister Revanth has made a direct public appeal urging residents to aggressively conserve both water and electricity to mitigate further strain on public infrastructure.
Looking ahead, the state government is preparing targeted interventions to support affected rural communities, including the rollout of a special employment guarantee scheme slated to begin immediately after the Sankranti festivities. Meanwhile, planners are evaluating long-term infrastructure reinforcements to safeguard the region against similar climatic shocks over the next few years.
