Andhra Pradesh Issues Emergency Orders to Contain African Swine Fever Outbreak in Vizianagaram

Andhra Pradesh officials have issued emergency directives to stem an African Swine Fever outbreak in Vizianagaram district, invoking immediate quarantine and movement restrictions on swine. The order, announced Friday, targets containment zones identified through recent pig mortality surveillance.
The directive reflects India's heightened vigilance against African Swine Fever, which has periodically threatened the nation's pork value chain since its first confirmed emergence in eastern states. Vizianagaram, with its dense network of smallholder pig farms and frequent inter-district livestock movement, has been flagged as a high-risk pocket. The state's response builds on lessons from previous outbreaks in 2020 and 2022, when rapid culling and farmer outreach proved pivotal in limiting spread.
"The state government is treating this with the urgency the situation demands," a senior animal husbandry official told Wire Chronicle, emphasizing that rapid-response teams have been deployed to conduct sampling, enforce biosafety protocols, and engage directly with farming communities. The official added that coordination with the central fisheries and animal resources ministry is ongoing, ensuring that containment measures align with national disease-management frameworks.
Authorities anticipate a phased containment strategy involving targeted culling of infected herds, comprehensive testing of surrounding farms, and a sustained awareness campaign to prevent complacency. Success in Vizianagaram could reinforce India's preparedness for future transboundary animal disease events, potentially shaping tighter biosecurity norms across high-density livestock regions.
